Overview of the Pressure Ulcer Management System

As Director of Nursing at a skilled nursing facility, I used this Pressure Ulcer Management System and I love it!!!

I learned about the PUSH Tool (which was developed by the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel) through Quality Insights of Pennsylvania.

The Pressure Ulcer Management System is easy to use! You do not have to be a wound specialist or a computer expert to use it. It does not cost the facility thousands of dollars to install and maintain as do many computer systems.

I am able to identify non-healing pressure ulcers sooner and change the treatments earlier.  Therefore wounds heal faster which enables the facility to save a bundle in dressing supply costs! We also reduced wound clinic visits. This also decreased costs!

The system prints many graphs and lists from the information entered.

One person responsible for wound care in the facility can manage all wound information with this system. I have found though, after using this system myself, the best way to use it is to provide the Unit Managers with access to the system. Using the tool and seeing the graphs move towards healing, encourages that Unit Manager to become more accountable and responsible to make changes that will create positive outcomes. By getting more people involved, they too can benefit by using this outcome based system.

Unit graphs and pie charts can be used to motivate staff to decrease in-house acquired numbers. Nurses will become more creative with measures to improve healing. They also will initiate preventive measures earlier.

The Pressure Ulcer Management System is easy to install in any computer. (I did it myself!) It is also easy to use. It has been a valuable tool for me to use to help me improve the health and quality of life of my Residents.
